I took my 11 week old pup to the vet today and they recommended I put him on Iam’s Low Residue Puppy dog food.
He has been having some problems with very soft stool and diarrhea. They think perhaps that he has a sensitive GI track and it is not absorbing the nutrients in his dog food.
I have been feeding him "California Natural Lamb and Rice food for Puppies" since his last bout of diarrhea almost a month ago. He was doing great on it but for some reason it started up again a few days ago and Pepto (they told me to give him some yesterday) did not really help very much.
The only problem with the Iam’s is that it is extremely expensive. They only make an 8 lb. bag in the puppy formula and it was over .50 a pound. There is no way I can continue to feed him that after this first bag. The "California Natural" is about .50 per pound for a large bag and it is a good quality food.
Does anyone know of any other dog food that may help ease GI irritation that is less expensive?
I want to give him the best but I can’t afford to feed him the Iam’s forever.
Let me know if you have any suggestions. Or if your dog has had to be on the Iam’s before and for how long. The vets said he may not have to be on it permanently, but at this point there is no way to tell. We have to wait and see.
Thank you!

Our 9yr old over weight basset has been eating Eukanuba Low Residue canned and dry food for 2 yrs.She was put on this food by the Vet to help control her weight. This product’s production is very inconsistant in moisture. Sometimes the canned is VERY dry and sometimes OK. We have to buy this food from our Vet. and eventhough she will eat it, we have doubts about it’s nutritional value, not to mention the inconvience and over-price. Since she was put on this food many new dog foods have come on the market. We think that some, or at least one ,of them would surpass her present food in consistancy and nutritional value. We just don’t know which one to consider. Her stomach is sensitive and she does have minor skin issues.Remember that she has a weight problem. We have to use both canned and dry mixed together since feeding her only dry after so many years isn’t an option. This is serious stuff, so please send only serious answers please.
She has hypothyroidism(under active) and is given thyrosin 2xs a day. Sensitive stomach- vomiting bile when her stomach is empty for too long. Treatment for that is metacloprimide2xs a day before meals and a Tums 3xs a day.
She’s already been through the Science Diet WDand RD. Didn’t work for weight loss and her skin was a real mess! Sores and very dry.Science Diet isn’t a choice.

She has only eaten high-quality food. I started her with Canidae, then I switched to California Natural since that has fewer ingredients and is therefore supposed to be easier on dogs’ stomachs, but the problem didn’t go away. Then I stopped giving her treats (so that the California Natural was the ONLY thing she was eating), but that didn’t help. I’ve had a few different vets check her out, and she is otherwise completely healthy. (No parasites or anything like that.) Her current vet wants to put her on Eukanaba Low Residue or Hill’s Prescription Diet i/d, but I don’t consider either of those to be good quality food. And I’m not prepared to try raw food diets or anything extreme like that. The next step would be expensive tests (bloodwork, x-rays, etc.). Does anybody have any other suggestions? Help!

I have had my 7 month old Jack Russell since she was 6wks old. She has had diarrhea since we have owned her and have spent lots of money on vet bills trying to find the root of the problem. Turns out she will have diarrhea the rest of her life due to an improperly developed small/large intestine. She is also on a diet of Low Residue by Eukanuba.

Due to her problem I am limited to the types of treats I can give her because they make it worse. I have tried Science Diet Jerky Treats, Iams and Eukanuba, Busy Bones, Dingos, Jumbones, etc. All make her sick. Does anyone have any idea of some treats homemade/store/or online that she might be able to eat without her diarrhea getting worse?

How good is the food and treats that the commercial pet food companies produce? Recently there’s been a lot of doubt about it. In 2007 after rat poison and other harmful chemicals were discovered in commercially produced dog foods, there was a very widespread recall of many pet food brands. As a result of the tainted food problem, vet clinics were overwhelmed with extremely sick dogs, often not being able to do anything and thousands upon thousands of dogs died from being poisoned.

During the latter part of 2011 and early 2012, more dog foods including so-called premium brands like Iams have had recalls after discovering excessive amounts of aflatoxin in the commercial food. Aflatoxin is a fungi that can cause liver cancer in dogs.

The situation has caused many pet owners to question the quality and control of commercial pet food makers. Because of these issues, a raw meat diet for dogs is now gaining support among pet owners.

A raw meat diet? Commercial pet food producers don’t want you to do that! It’s a billion dollar plus industry and they certainly don’t want to have their profits cut into. Some of the large pet food manufacturers are actually warning pet owners to not try a raw diet, suggesting there are many risks involved.

But many dog owners are talking excitedly about the health advantages they are seeing after switching their dog to a raw diet of meat and bones. These benefits for their pets include:

Reduced or eliminated bad body odor

Fewer visits to the Veterinarian due to decreased health concerns

Less requirement for water

These are but a few of the benefits. Of course, the pet food industry want to point out that this is simply anecdotal evidence, and is not proof that feeding your dog a raw meat diet is healthy in the long run. They claim that feeding a raw diet has greater risks including that of bacterial infection.

While it is true that the evidence is mostly anectodatal, those of us who are nervous about what is going into commercial pet foods have nothing else to go by. It is doubtful that the animal feed producers will be funding studies that put their product up against what canines have been eating forever.

Feeding your dog a raw meat diet is not that difficult. There is some hesitation on the part of pet lovers, but the risks in feeding raw are quite low when you consider the risks of contaminated dog food.

Another issue is the manner in which commercial foods are labelled, wanting us to believe that the primary ingredient in their food is meat. But it is false that most commercial dog foods are primarily made of of meat. Combined, the total weight of all the other ingredients including grains outweighs the amount of meat in dry kibble.

Raw bones are an essential part of a raw meat diet. While some
might balk at the idea of feeding their dogs bones (not heavy bones that they cannot crush with their teeth), canines in the wild do consume bone material. We are often told that we should be careful about feeding bones to pets, however it is cooked bones that we should avoid letting our pets have. Bone composition changes when they are cooked; this is when they become more brittle and cause problems for pets eating them. Digestibility of uncooked bones by dogs is very good. The chewing on the bones has the additional benefit of keeping Fido’s teeth clean and removing tartar.

In the end, there is much to be said for the benefits of feeding dogs a raw food diet despite the warnings of those who have a financial interest in pet owners not doing this.
